Elizabeth E. Burke, D.V.M.

Dr. Burke is a native of Easton. Always loving animals, she had her sights on becoming a veterinarian by the time she was nine years old. She received her B.S. from Northampton Community College and her B.S. from Cornell University. Her first application to veterinary school was denied. There was a quota of only two females per class in the mid-seventies.

After working for Pfizer, Inc., as both a lab technician and a pharmaceutical sales representative (calling on medical doctors), she reapplied to veterinary school and was accepted. The veterinary class was then comprised of 80% women. She received her veterinary degree from Cornel University in 1985. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at The Animal Medical Center in New York City in 1986. Dr. Burke was employed as a staff veterinarian at North Shore Animal League in Port Washington, N.Y.for two years. It was at this no-kill shelter that she learned not to give up on a patient.

Thoreau Veterinary Hospital, Inc. was founded by Dr. Burke in December 1988. AAHA certification was awarded in 1993. After practicing in the city of Easton at tenth and Northampton street for thirteen years, the hospital was relocated to its present location in 2001.

Dr. Burke is married and has twin daughters due to the advances in infertility medicine. She presently has two cats and two guinea pigs.
